Grupo Fenix, Nicaragua
The workshop is cosponsored by Grupo Fenix, a non-profit organization that supports renewable energy and sustainable development in Nicaragua.
The workshop will take place in a rural community in Nicaragua, Sabana Grande. Participants will stay with local families, install a solar PV lighting system, and help a woman's cooperative build and use solar ovens.
The workshop price includes food, lodging, and all in-country transportation.
Travel Information
If traveling by air, please plan to arrive at the Managua Airport on Sunday, November 2nd, and plan to fly out Sunday, November 9th. We suggest you book your flights with Jan Carpenter from Earth Routes. Jan gets good prices and will arrange for the participants to arrive at the same time. Plus, each airline ticket plants three trees through the non-profit Seed Tree. If traveling by land or will be arriving early, we can arrange to meet you at Suni Solar (a Grupo Fenix solar enterprise) on Sunday evening. Suni Solar is located at: Barrio Edgard Mungía, de los semáforos de ENEL Central, 80 metros al sur.
Lodging Participants will be staying with local families in the countryside. Be prepared for rustic living. The homes have dirt floors and outside "showers" (the family will bring the water from the nearest well available and have it ready in a 5 gallon bucket). Some of the participants will have to walk 1 or 2 kilometers from their homes to the workshop site. You will be eating the traditional gallopinto (rice and beans) with tortillas every morning and night. Please let us know of any health or diet considerations that will help us place you with an appropriate family.
